When David Kaufman was 5 ? years old, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor he couldn?t even pronounce. When he turned 6, he suffered from something that rolled off the tongue more easily?a stroke.
Known as subependymal giant cell astrocytoma, Kaufman?s form of cancer is the result of a genetic disease that causes tumors.
?This type of tumor doesn?t respond to chemotherapy,? said mom Miriam Kaufman, who added that ?because of (David?s) brain tumor, his quality of life has been compromised.?
Now almost 22, David Kaufman is legally blind and partially paralyzed. But that doesn?t stop the Poway High School graduate from taking everything in stride?in fact he?s just finishing up the Transition Program for disabled adults through Abraxas High School.
?He?s a really, really remarkable young man,? Miriam Kaufman said. ?He has a great personality and just doesn?t complain. ? He?s really amazing.?
He?s also dedicated to helping other kids with cancer by raising money for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation?where his mom serves as the San Diego task force leader.
A non-profit organization formed in 1991, the PBTF offers families of cancer-stricken children scholarships and general support in addition to researching new, less invasive treatment options.
On Sunday, June 10, David Kaufman will join the PBTF as they host their second annual Bowl for a Cure fundraising event at Poway Fun Bowl. Tickets are $20 and include two games, shoes, food and beverages. The event runs from 2 to 5 p.m.
